The Railway Arms was the only place Sam knew was totally safe- especially when Gene and his band of buffoons weren’t there. Nelson smiled warmly as the DI entered, slinging a towel over his shoulder and pouring the man his usual beverage.
“What happened to you mon bruv? You get in a fight or summink?” Nelson frowned as he studied Sam’s face. Deep cuts etched across his cheeks, bruises scattered across his forehead and eyes, a fresh surge of blood dripping out of his mouth onto the countertop.
“No, I just…walked into a door, it’s nothing, really.” He knew Sam was covering something up; even by the way he was sitting, the way he drank, as if it hurt just to swallow. Nelson watched him carefully, not daring to say another word to him, as if another word might actually kill him. Sam didn’t say another word either, as if he’d give everything away if he opened his mouth.
“Look Sam,” he whispered in his northern accent, leaning across the bar to the injured man. “If you just-” But that was the end of the conversation as the bar door was thrust open. Sam covered his eyes as not to be noticed. Probably someone from down the station, and so not the best idea to be in the pub, covered in injuries when taking a day off. He was ill, just in more ways than one.

Rod shoved against the doors of the Railway Arms. He was skiving from the job, as always, and as soon as the almighty Hunt had told the officers to be on their way and get on with the work, he had skipped merrily down to the pub, well, he didn't skip, a slow saunter would be a better description. It was nothing the Guv wouldn't do himself anyway. Quick drink solved everything, and it didn't hurt, either. The pub was unusually quiet, and it was only when Rob realized why, did he smile. No regular, rowdy drunken activity meant that Gene and his lackeys weren't in the vicinity. Someone was there though. That weird Tyler bloke. He looked terrible; he looked terrible usually, like he didn't sleep for days or something and put far too much effort into the job, but he looked well and truly terrible today. God knew what he'd been up to. Rod careered over to the bar and slid onto a stool, not too close to Tyler, but not too far away as to suggest he was avoiding the man. To tell the truth, he was one scary fella.
"Oi, Tyler, right? Don't tell anyone I'm here, alright? I know you're a grass, so don't try it. But I reckon, using my lateral thinking, now, that you are skiving off just as much as I! So if you snitch, I snitch right back. Got it?" Rod stated, looking ahead to the back of the bar, somehow unnerved at the sight of Tyler. No-one could get cuts and bruises like that just by tripping over in the streets.

"Sure, whatever," Sam replied. Like he'd be in trouble for being ill- but as he thought about it more, he would. The Guv would never allow him to take a day off and then saunter down to the pub, that was his trick. Then again, Hunt always said alcohol helped to clear the mind, so maybe that's exactly what he needed. Sam's eyes wandered along the bar, trying his hardest not to stare at the man he knew he should dispise. He should hate everyone in this freaky place, but that wasn't the point. Sam knew he couldn't sit here in silence- it might seem as if he was ignoring the other man.
"So what are you in here for? Hunt told you to get hammered before doing any work?"
Maybe not the best thing to do after all...

"I'm thinking of getting hammered and then not doing any work at all. What's your problem, Tyler? Gotta ask people what they do all the time? That's like you thing, ain't it? You pry into people's business. Gets results, but no respect. Something go wrong putting your make-up on this morning?" Rod replied bluntly, getting right to the point as he always did. He nodded at Tyler and indicated those scratches along his face. There was something up with the weirdo, but he couldn't care less. The sound of a feminine voice singing a jaunty tune reached his ears, and Rod listened for a few seconds confusedly, before recognizing the sixties song. Petula Clarke sang about going downtown to forget all your troubles, or something. He didn't much like the song. It was too jolly for someone singing about worries.
Rod looked to Tyler and narrowed his eyes as if scrutinizing him. Why didn't that guy ever fit in with anyone else? And as soon as he started to, go and perform some rash and stupid stunt to throw himself back into the doghouse. Somehow, Rod was put off the idea of drinking himself ratted now. Seeing Tyler in that depressing state must have influenced him, and now he was feeling rotten too. Tyler was in the inner circle, even though the crazy bastard was obviously off his rocker. Where was he? Left out of the loop, every single time. His blood boiled looking at Tyler, his anger rising slightly like hackles.

"I don't pry..." Sam replied, sarcastically. "Aren't I supposed to be your superior officer? It's the thing I'm supposed to ask you."
He clenched his fist under the table. All Sam did was talk, never fight back. He shot back the last of his drink, swaying slightly on his chair- was he really drunk? He'd only had two glasses, hardly anything compared to what he usually had. He slammed the glass down on the top, nearly crushing it in his icy grip, and grabbed his coat from the back of his stool and pulled it on quickly, not daring to look at the other man before he had to.
Rubbing the side of his already bruised face, Sam stared thoughtfully into the empty glass in front of him, willing himself, loosening himself up, and without taking another thought, swung his fist up, aiming for Rod's chin.

Rod saw Tyler aim a fist at him, but he couldn't move quick enough, and the other man managed to lay a perfect punch right across his jaw. Rod thankfully had stood up before he'd been struck, so all he did was stagger back, flabbergasted. He rubbed his chin vigorously and stared at the DI who had swung out at him. That wasn't like Tyler at all! Tyler always shrugged off any insults thrown at him. He must have been in a really bad way. Rod considered grabbing Tyler by the throat and shoving him up against the bar, but he'd be thrown off the force for sure if he assaulted a superior. Tyler was right on that one at least. He hoped the man wasn't going to become another Gene Hunt. This wasn't going to become a brawl, Rod thought to himself, so he remained silent and didn't lash out in return. That would only make matters worse, and Tyler obviously wasn't in the mood for anymore talk from an inferior. Rod didn't even think asking him what the hell he was on would do any good.
Rod straightened his jacket absent-mindedly, as if nothing had happened at all. His ego was bruised, but it was still there. He glared at Tyler and looked away. "Sorry Detective Inspector." he said simply. What a little suck-up! But he had better have said something than naught at all. He shrugged and made for the door. If Tyler was gonna be like that. then he didn't want to know.

"W-wait a second," Sam stuttered, something had just come to the front of his mind that scared more shit out of him than Rod ever would. Sam made a step towards Rod, trying as hard as he could to sound less angry, more trustful. "Don't tell the Guv I smacked you one, eh?" Sam wasn't sure what the reaction would be. "And don't tell him you saw me at the pub either, okay?" He sighed and waited for the reply nervously.

"Bit late for that, sunshine! Should have thought about that before you laid that killer on me!" Rod retorted, holding in quite a substantial amount of seething hatred. He rounded on Tyler and held up a fist as if going to punch him back after all, but dropped his arm to his side and rubbed his forehead, growling to himself quietly. The man was joking, right? He didn't honestly believe if he just asked him to not tell on him, he'd be in the clear? If he had apologized, then maybe he would consider it, but truth be told, Tyler had meant that, and wasn't going to take it back easy, because according to the Guv, Tyler was as stubborn as an old lady hanging on to sanity in her old, immense mansion. Rod looked down at the floral patterns on the carpet under his feet and shrugged again. There was something up in Tyler, and Rod didn't like it one bit. it made the man dangerous to his immediate health. He'd already struck him across the jaw, what would he do next?
Despite what was running through his head, Rod let it be. If he let the DI off, maybe he could put in a good word later on when the incident was nothing more than a hilarious story followed by plenty of laughs. He scratched his chin, forgetting about the sharp pain that accompanyed the action. He looked up again with a bit of a grim and concerned expression. Maybe if got talking to the DI, he'd find out an excuse for Tyler to use for hitting him. "No probs, DI Tyler. Won't tell a soul." he said finally, forcing a smile and shoving his hands in his pockets.

For the first time that day, it seemed, Sam smiled, almost too warmly. Why was he being so nice all of a sudden? There wasn't much time to think as pain suddenly shot through Sam's head, and he raised a head to it suddenly, rubbing it off as if nothing had happened and seating himself infront of the bar.
"What you having?" Sam asked. The least he could do for not telling the Guv, even though he was supposed to be on duty, but Sam thought pointing that out to Rod would cause him to end up at the wrong side of Gene Hunt. Not a wise move under these circumstances.

"Haha! Now that's what I like to hear a DI utter!" Rod replied, returning Tyler's smile and only frowning slightly when he raised a hand to his head as if a splitting headache had attacked him. He thought it best not to push Tyler for answers, and just to pretend there was nothing wrong with him, as he was doing. If he tried asking him questions, he'd only get another smack around the head, he could sense it. So he crossed the room and sat down again, a little closer to Tyler, but not close enough to be within touching distance, just in case the man tried a roundhouse or something. One could never be too careful, and it was better safe than sorry. He folded his arms and rested them on the counter, lazily laying his head over them for support, leaning forward as he did so. Might as well try and enjoy himself, even if he was sitting next to a battered DI with anger management problems.
"I'll have what you're--" Rod began, then remembering that Tyler had downed a second glass before striking out at him, he changed his mind. "I'll have a scotch, ta." he said finally, as if he hadn't slipped up in his response at all. He shot Tyler a quick smile, in case he took it the wrong way. He was awfully wary of the man. Some of the stories he'd heard from people who knew Ray and Chris suggested he was pretty insane...

“I’ll have the same again please, Nelson.”
Sam cocked his head to the side. The pain had subsided for the moment, but the bruises around his eyes were giving him hell every time he blinked.
“So what case are you on at the moment?” He asked, making small talk. He might have something in common with Rod, but the man was so like Ray that he daren’t start talking otherwise Rod might strike out. “’Course, I’ve been off so I wouldn’t know,” Sam tried another smile, failing and taking another sip of his drink. He had been off, but the cause of his illness was long forgotten now. The day seemed to have dragged on forever.
Sam took another gulp of his drink. He didn't normally drink too much [well, not without the Guv around anyway] but today, he really felt like he deserved a drink.

"Pfft, case? What case? We aren't on any case. Well, it is a case, but I wouldn't call it one. Just looking into a drug den and possible run somewhere on the outskirts. That's why I'm skivin'. I'd rather be here than out there staking out outside some grotty little shack, waiting for something interesting to happen whilst trying to stay awake! No thank you. How long you been off then? I mean, I hardly see any of you lordly DCIs, DIs and DSs, so I can't be the judge. You coulda been away from months and I wouldn't have known any better, Tyler." Rod answered, less than tactfully, but confessing to the DI as to why he was in the pub and not on that case. Maybe the prestigious Sam Tyler, the legendary madman, woud indulge him in a bit of talk from his end if he asked.
Rod leaned over the bar and stared at the drink that had presented itself to him. He didn't quite feel like drinking it now, but he had to now he'd ordered it. Tyler wasn't hesitant, at least. He was trying to smile, but never quite made it each time. Rod didn't blame him, it probably killed him with pain ever time he even blinked, let alone try and crack a smile or two.

Sam opened his mouth to order Rod to get back out there, but closed it again and took another sip of his drink. Ah, he was ill, he couldn't really go around telling the rest of the station how to do their jobs if he wasn't really doing his.
"Fair enough," Sam shrugged, rubbing the side of his face with his cut, bruised hand. Too many injuried, that was the problem with him.
"Huh? Oh, just today. Feels like it's been one hell of a day though and it's only-" Sam checked the clock, he sighed and carried on "- only bloody 12 o'clock!" He laughed at his own stupidness. Well if he didn't, then who else would?
"Oh well," Sam started, yawning. "I s'pose that-" But he was cut off mid-sentence as the door to the Railway Arms flew open. Sam bolted for the exit, hearing shouts, screams and the sound of breaking glass outside.
He just hoped the Guv didn't turn up. Not a great thing to be doing while you're ill.

Rod was about to reply, snidely or otherwise, when Tyler suddenly ran to the main doors, which had flown open, and the sudden and sharp sound of people shouting and the odd crash and bang reached his ears. Rod stood up, tripped over the stool sitting behind him, reached out with a arm, knocked over that scotch he'd never tried drinking and spilled it all over the counter and behind it. Nelson gave a disappointed cry, but Rod just uttered an apology, picked himself up and raced to the door to where Tyler was standing just outside and looked on at the scene playing out before the two police officers. Rod withheld a gasp and tried to keep his cool as much as possible. He didn't want to seem panicky in front of a bloody DI.
There was what looked like from his angle, a fight going on. It may have been a gang war, or a simple attack, but whatever it was, it was spiraling out of control and dangerous. There were ordinary people walking the streets, and they were going to get hurt if flying glass bottles hit them. There were about six men fighting. Some were throwing glass wine bottles, others brawling with each other and rolling across the road. Where it had just been quiet outside, it was now as load as a factory floor, and growing louder.
"Bloody Hell, Boss! What do you wanna do?!" Rod managed, after a pause.

Sam didn't have time to answer, his heart was racing... fast, too fast. Bottles flew from every direction, and he didn't have time to react as he was hit with a spatter of glass.
"Shit," he cried, grabbing Rod's jacket and dragging him towards his face, almost eye level with the other man. "Go get rid of the public, I'll try call for back-up," he loosened his grip and began fumbling about in his pocket, searching for a radio- and that's when he realised. "Shit!" He repeated clenching his fists as he stared at the scene in front of him. "I left the radio at the station. Look, go help them, I'm gonna ring the Guv from inside."
Sam ran back into the Railway Arms, grabbing the reciever and dialing like hell.
